From birth to two months is the “newborn” stage. It is a time of joy and excitement, but also of tiredness and confusion. Parents often ask me for tips on how to find some order or structure during this time. And here some advices:
Try to create a flexible routine that allows you to enjoy this time. Try not to stick to the clock when it comes to feeding or putting your baby to bed but watch your baby and read the signs they give. Remember that this is a time of getting to know each other, and it will take time for you to understand your baby’s needs and for your baby to develop a routine. Try to be patient.
In the first few weeks, we want to give them an environment similar as possible to the one they had in the womb. Create a pleasant atmosphere in your home. This does not need to be stimulus-free, but avoid strong stimuli such as loud music, strong smells or rough fabrics. Maintain a calm atmosphere with white noise (such as soft music), monotonous movement and gradual exposure to stimuli. give your baby as much touch as possible – don’t be afraid of them getting used to being on your hands too much.
Hold your baby in a cradle position. This is when they are laying horizontally in your hands, supported by your arms at the head and behind the knees. The head is slightly higher than the pelvis, the back is bent, and their arms and legs are in the middle of the body. Make sure you switch between sides so that the baby can move the head equally in both directions. Talk to your baby in this position, look into their eyes – they will recognise your voice from the womb, and this will increase their sense of security.
Let your baby lie on their stomach when you are beside them and they are under supervision. In this position, they can rest in their shell and not be so exposed to the world. It is also important for your baby to be familiar with the tummy time routine.
All of this will give your baby a soft landing into the world and reduce the fussiness that often accompanies babies at this stage. It will also help you to have a more relaxed time and even enjoy it.
